Merle J. Meyer Obituary (1923

Merle J. Meyer, 88, of Maynard, died Friday morning, January 6, 2012, at his home. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Maynard with Rev. Ian Wolfe officiating. Visitation: 4 to 8 P.M. on Monday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard and for one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church in Maynard. Interment: Long Grove Cemetery, Maynard, Iowa. Military Graveside Rites by the Maynard American Legion Lundbye-Carpenter Post #245. A Memorial Fund has been established in his name for the Maynard First Responders and Fire Department. Merle Junior Meyer was born October 18, 1923, in Fayette County, Iowa, the son of Will and Veryl (Smith) Meyer. He graduated from the Maynard Consolidated School. Merle joined the United States Navy on May 27, 1941 and was discharged December 17, 1946 as an Aviation Metalsmith First Class. Served on Aircraft Carrier USS Lexington until its loss in the Battle of Coral Sea on May 8, 1942. Then served on bases on Oahu, New Caledonia, Vella La Vella and in Alameda, California. On January 28, 1945, he was united in marriage to Edith Bartels at Long Beach, California. Merle was a farmer, driver for Spahn & Rose Lumber Company and seasonal driver for the Maynard Coop. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Maynard where he served on various boards. Merle was a past board member for the West Central School Board and secretary for Northeast Iowa Federation of Square Dancers. He enjoyed playing cards, jigsaw puzzles and attending high school sports activities. Merle is survived by his Wife, Edith Meyer of Maynard, Iowa; 2 Sons, Neal (Sandra) Meyer of Des Moines, Iowa, Hal (Patricia) Meyer of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 3 Daughters, Linda Meyer of Lenexa, Kansas, Gail (Randy) Fink of Westgate, Iowa, and Jean Meyer of Lenexa, Kansas; 7 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren, Eric (Stephanie) Meyer and Mason, Sam and Tom of London, England, Mark (Jen) Meyer and Meghan, Addison and Aiden of Ankeny, Iowa Erin (Dale) Tackitt and Lincoln of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Rob (Christine) Meyer and Logan and Gaige of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Brianne (Dave) Kopecky and Casey of Arlington, Virginia, Jill Fink of Mission, Kansas, and Nathan Fink of Olathe, Kansas; Sister, Elizabeth Furay of Southfield, Michigan; Brother-in-law, Dale (Phyllis) Williams of Maynard, Iowa; and many Nieces and Nephews. He was preceded in death by his Parents; Grandson, Jeffrey Fink; Brothers, Leslie, Russell and Elton Meyer; Sisters, Lucille Byerly, Arlene Schmidtke, Winifred Rogers, Fern Williams and Arlys Meyer Step-Mother, Bertha (Thompson) Meyer; and Step-Brothers, Art and Franklin Thompson.
