Dorothy Jane Van De Walker

Dorothy J. Van De Walker, 80, of Oelwein, Iowa died Sunday evening, September 22, 2013 at Grandview Health Care Center in Oelwein, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. Officiating: Rev. Paul C. McManus and Deacon Jim Patera. Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein. Parish Scripture Service: 7:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein, Iowa. A Memorial Fund has been established in her name.

Dorothy Jane Roose was born on December 16, 1932 at Odebolt, Iowa the daughter of Oscar and Margaret Catherine (Miller) Roose. She graduated from St. Charles High School at St. Charles, Illinois. She worked as a secretary for a doctor at Geneva, Illinois and at restaurant in St. Charles, Illinois. On December 16, 1950, she was united in marriage to Keith William Van De Walker at Waverly, Iowa. Dorothy was a cook at the Oelwein Junior High School for four years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Alcoholics Anonymous, the American Legion Auxiliary and Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters Auxiliary in Oelwein. Dorothy was a Cub Scout leader when her four sons were growing up and did volunteer work for many cancer and heart fund drives in Oelwein. She also enjoyed canning food each summer and fall for the winter months, crocheting, taking pictures, camping, fishing, hiking and working in the garden. Playing cards with friends and family was one of her favorite pastimes and she loved to cook, bake and send cards and letters to family and friends. The most enjoyable and rewarding thing in her life was her family, spending time with them and doing special things for them.

Dorothy is survived by her four sons, Dennis (Kathy Nolan) Van De Walker of Iowa City, Thomas (Kari) Van De Walker of Independence, Duane (Brenda Lau) Van De Walker of Waterloo and Norman (Jan) Van De Walker of Oelwein; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; sister, Janet Smallwood of South Elgin, Illinois; and special friend, Joseph Jergens of West Bend, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Keith on October 3, 2005; grandson, Dylan Thomas Van De Walker and a brother, Norman Edward Roose.
