Carl R. Betts, 87, of Oelwein, Iowa and formerly of Hazleton, Iowa died on Wednesday morning, February 27, 2013 at his home
Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. on Monday, March 4, 2013 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein; Officiating: Deacon Jim Patera; Visitation: from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Sunday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home where there will be a Military Memorial Service at 4:30 P.M. on Sunday by the Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 Honor Guard; Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery in rural Oelwein, Iowa
Memorials may be given in his name to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Carl Russell Betts was born on January 13, 1926 at Oran, Iowa, the son of Earl Edward and Esther (Nichols) Betts. He graduated from Oelwein High School in 1944. Carl was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Force. He married Luella Jean Destival on June 19, 1949 at Hazleton, Iowa. He farmed in the Hazleton area for many years and was also a supervisor in department #37 at the John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo for 25 years. Carl was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Oelwein Council #1168 and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly #1853, Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 and Honor Guard, 50 year mason in Hebron Masonic Lodge #374 A.F. & A.M., and the El Kahir Shrine.
Carl is survived by: Daughter—Mona Betts (special friend-Harold Buhr) of Oelwein, Iowa 2 Sons—Wayne (Diane) Betts of Mechanicsville, Iowa and Russell (Marla) Betts of Waterloo, Iowa; 9 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren 3 Brothers—Ralph (Margaret) Betts of Hampton, Iowa Richard (Marilyn) Betts of Medicine Lake, Washington Ronald (Chris) Betts of Osage, Iowa Sister—Dorothy Tollman of Iowa City, Iowa
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; wife (Luella J. Betts on November 7, 2006); Grandson (Adam Levendusky on May 22, 1990) and a sister (Donna Downs).
